STEERING BOARD - TERMS OF REFERENCE

Purpose: To make the legal profession better for those who are in it, those who use it, and those who are entering it.

Vision: To realise the potential of every legal professional to create a more engaged, inclusive and healthy profession.

As the Steering Board our role is to be the custodians of the O Shaped movement (the O). In order to achieve the Purpose and Vision of the O, and follow through on the significant interest and traction gained in the sector, Dan Kayne, Founder of the O, has set up the O Shaped Lawyer Ltd (OSLL) and now operates through this vehicle full time. OSLL is there as an entity to drive the O forward, capitalise on the momentum to date, and give the O the best chance of long term success in achieving its aims. As the Steering Board, we will:

  • meet at regular intervals, as appropriate and no less than once a month;

  • support Dan and OSLL with our expertise, resource and perspectives;

  • check and challenge Dan and OSLL in an appropriate way, prioritising strategic and longer-term issues;

  • assist Dan and OSLL to set priorities and contribute to the delivery of them; and

  • keep our discussions on point and within our remit.

In order to be the best that we can be as a Board, we believe we should:

  • be fully aware of the Purpose and Vision of the O;

  • show up (both physically and mentally);

  • be well prepared;

  • be willing to share our expertise as appropriate;

  • be willing to represent the O to external audiences in an appropriate and informed way;

  • show respect to our fellow board members;

  • be willing to discuss issues in a rigorous and robust way, and then unite behind the agreed decision;

  • do what we say we are going to do;

  • maintain communication with each other and stakeholders outside of Board meetings; and

  • demonstrate common sense and good judgement.

    We will meet with the Future Board twice a year to ensure unity, consistency and enhance both of our abilities to carry out our roles in the best way possible.
